Purpose of the assignment: think and write about the thing(s) we may not like about college sports in terms of concrete institutions. Sports do not spontaneously or automatically embody some universal/essential logic. Instead, sports culture — whether good or bad — is made through concrete institutions, like the notion that women shouldn’t play American football is created through specific institutions like powder puff football. Or that the commodification of sports spectator identity is brought about by specific institutions like the emergence of fantasy sports.
The first step: define the problem as you see it, precisely.
There are six topics and you can choose the one you like the most. (Found at bottom of page). Each topic is fairly broad, so it depends on which one you can explain and interpret the most. You may also dive into an additional problem if you feel like combining two into each other. The cap is 2 pages double-spaced for this assignment so that is your call.
Second step: explain why it would be/is so difficult to change this undesired behavior. This is the key component of the assignment. The object here is to explain how this aspect of college sports you don’t like is institutionalized. Suggestion by the professor: you can approach your analysis even by describing the resistance to some hypothetical change to the way college sports works– who would resist, what the form of it would be, how likely it would be to quash the attempt at reform.
Things to remember:
-What matters is not that you take any particular position on a subject, but that you demonstrate an understanding of how college sport is concretely ordered by social institutions (i.e., college sport is “socially constructed”, but you won’t just be stating so, but rather also showing how so).
-This assignment is not merely to describe how serious you think the problem identified is. That might be part of the write-up. But it is not all of it or even the most important part of it.

As stated on olympic.org, there are many reasons why hosting the Olympic Games is attractive to a city or country. The expectations that the event will have a positive impact, both tangible and intangible, on local communities is alive and well. From developing an underserved part of a city and expanding much-needed infrastructure to boosting the local economy and increasing tourism, hosting such a large-scale event can bring about great opportunities. However, cost overruns, questions over resource use and perceived corruption among other challenges have left some populations hesitant about their city’s bid to host the Olympic Games.
In this case study I’d like for you to examine the arguments for and against hosting the Olympic Games, and shine a light on the real experiences, both challenging and inspiring, faced by organizers. Your assignment is to discuss the 3 positive and 3 negative effects the Olympics can have on a host city after the games are over. Please designate a theory that applies to each positive and negative.

ASSESSMENT 2: Session Planning (40%)
Develop a session plan (about 1.5 hours) of a selected sport for a group of 8-12
school children or athletes.
Guidelines:
1. Complete the session plan and fill in all necessary parts of the tabulated form
(app.1) provided (available at SOUL)
2. Identify the sport selected and level of athletes
3. Develop specific and measurable objectives (skill and fitness)
4. Identify different stages of the coaching session, e.g. skill practice, application,
fitness training …and so on with time allocated
5. Develop appropriate contents with progressions and practices
6. Write down major points for various learning activities
7. Draw diagrams to indicate organization of practices, if needed
8. Include a reference list at the end of the program plan. Suggested readings are
provided in the module outline.
