College readiness is a critical factor in student success in higher education. W

College readiness is a critical factor in student success in higher education. While many students
aspire to attend college, not all are adequately prepared for the academic and social demands
of college life. Pre-college transition programs have been implemented to bridge this gap and
increase college readiness among high school students. These programs aim to equip students
with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in college, including academic preparation,
study skills, time management, and social integration.
Despite the increasing popularity of pre-college transition programs, their effectiveness remains
uncertain. While some studies have shown positive effects on college readiness and academic
performance, others have found no significant impact. This raises questions about the
effectiveness of these programs and the factors that contribute to their success or failure.
The ideal scenario is that all students are adequately prepared for the challenges of college life
and have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed. However, the reality is that many
students face significant barriers to college readiness, such as inadequate academic
preparation, lack of support and guidance, and financial constraints. These challenges can result
in poor academic performance, low retention rates, and ultimately, lower graduation rates.
The research problem is that there is a gap in our understanding of the effectiveness of precollege transition programs in improving college readiness and academic performance. While
some studies have reported positive effects, others have found no significant impact. This gap
in our understanding poses a significant challenge to policymakers, educators, and students
alike.
Therefore, the aim of this research project is to examine the relationship between college
readiness and the effect of pre-college transition programs. Specifically, the study will
investigate the factors that contribute to the success or failure of these programs, including
program design, implementation, and student characteristics. The research will provide insights
into the effectiveness of pre-college transition programs and inform policymakers and
educators on best practices for promoting college readiness among high school students.
To establish the legitimacy of the research problem, this study will draw on two scholarly, peerreviewed resources. The first study by Mariani and colleagues (2019) examines the impact of a
pre-college transition program on college readiness and academic performance among lowincome, first-generation college students. The study found that the program had a significant
positive effect on college readiness and academic performance, particularly for students with
low initial levels of readiness. The second study by Hock and colleagues (2020) examines the
factors that contribute to the success of pre-college transition programs, including program
design, implementation, and student characteristics. The study found that effective programs
incorporate a holistic approach that addresses both academic and social integration, provide
ongoing support and mentorship, and tailor services to meet the unique needs of students.
Overall, this research problem statement establishes the need for further investigation into the
effectiveness of pre-college transition programs in promoting college readiness and academic
success among high school students. By addressing this gap in our understanding, the study will
provide insights into the factors that contribute to the success or failure of these programs and
inform best practices for promoting college readiness among diverse student populations

Description of Award:
Established in 1993, this award is in memory of Donna Jones Moritsugu, wife of Dr. Kenneth P. Moritsugu, Former Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, who was killed in an automobile accident. The award honors and recognizes the partners of graduating osteopathic medical students who best exemplify the role of any professional’s partner by providing immeasurable support and who are often content to bask in the reflected light of their partner, for their unwavering dedication and support. These individuals are the “Wind Beneath Our Wings.”
Eligability:
A legally recognized partner or spouse of any graduating fourth-year, osteopathic medical student who exemplifies the role of a professional’s partner by providing immeasurable support of his or her partner, family and the osteopathic profession, while being an individual in their own right.
Nominating: My fiance, Mason. We have been dating for 5 years, got engaged October 2022.
POINTS TO DISCUSS/THOUGHTS (these are just notes I have jotted down about talking points. You don’t need to quote any of this verbatim, just hoping to give an idea of how much he means to me because I want the essay to feel heartfelt.)
1. Providing immeasurable support of his/her partner:
-Having a supportive partner during my first year of medical school meant something completely different to me than it did during my second through fourth year.
-Support during first year: occasional coffee, flowers or dinner after I did well on a difficult exam, listening to me cry and complain, the occasional trip to the dog park for a study break.
-My little brother, Matthew, whom I was very close with died very suddenly at age 19 on October 25, 2020 (first semester of 2nd year of medical school, he died from an accidental fentanyl overdose after accidentally taking a laced oxycodone. My mom found him dead in his closet). Mason and I didn’t live together yet. This was the heart of covid– I was studying 80+ hours/week in my apartment alone with minimal social interaction. As isolating as it already felt, then I had to do that while also grieving my little brother. My dad also passed away right before medical school, so my familial support system was mainly my mom, who lived 3.5 hours away and was dealing with her own grief.
-Mason would come over and sit on my couch while I studied with my headphones in just to make sure I wasn’t alone and in case I needed a hug.
-Mason always knew the right times to make a joke to try to make me smile but also knew when I just needed to be held and cry.
-Being with someone who isn’t in medicine requires even more patience and empathy because they truly don’t know what you’re going through and the amount of stress you’re under. Mason not only stuck with me during the most stressful and rigorous part of my professional life, but also the worst years of my personal life that were happening at the same time.
-He physically and mentally picked me up off the ground so many times and during a time of extreme depression.
-During this horrible time, where I felt so unlovable and like Mason must dread being around me, he asked to move in together a few months after Matthew died. The time I felt the worst about myself and so unlovable, he saw only the good in me and our relationship and didn’t falter in his committment to me.
Providing immeasurable support of family:
-Mason is an amazing son and brother and manages to prioritize his family on top of everything else he has going on.
-He has been there for my family during these times of grief. During my little brother’s (Matthews) visitation prior to his funeral, Mason just stood behind me and my family for 5+ hours (because so many people came and the line took forever) even though he hadn’t met a lot of my family yet and didn’t know any of the people coming through the line. He just stood behind me the entire time just in case I needed to turn around for a hug or needed a bite to eat.
While being an individual in their own right:
-Mason graduated from IU’s Kelley School of Business. He began in investment banking, but has since worked his way up to becoming a Vice President at a successful private equity firm in Chicago.
-He works 60+ hours a week, continues to be successful in his career, while consistantly being there for me and my/his family.
-Mason rarely complains to me about his days, often listening to me and my problems for the past few years and always empathizing with my stress, even though he has so much stress of his own.
-He is an avid golfer and loves to spend time with his friends
These individuals are the “Wind Beneath Our Wings”:
-I always say that Mason is my angel on earth because there is no way I could have gotten through medical school and my brothers death without him.
