The research question is:
How has the increasing trend of globalization affected the ethical practices and communication of corporations in Canada, and what are the potential positive and negative implications of this trend on the ethics of external communication of Canadian corporations?
Some of the sources required for the literature review are from a previous assignment. The sources are posted in a file below; they are relevant to the topic, however, they need to be condensed into a literature review and divided into themes.

Overview
In DEI practice there is an area of human processes that can heavily impact the effectiveness of any DEI initiative and/or campaign–Language. Let’s have a discussion on how this area really impacts our field. Read the information below and then participate in the discussion thread.
Language
By now we know that language, and how it is used, can be extremely powerful and/or extremely detrimental. Beyond the surface-level uses of language, there are also more complex language applications that require community access and understanding of cultures to comprehend. Sometimes the language we use can be inclusive and sometimes it can be exclusive/isolating. In strategic communication, the language/verbiage we use in campaigns, ads, and graphics needs to be carefully chosen because we have to continuously think about how the language we use will be perceived. Unless you are working in shock marketing (which we are definitely not!), then you are most likely looking for positive and embracing receptions to the language used in your communication.
When thinking about inclusivity in language, it is imperative to keep empathy and emotional intelligence in mind. For instance, if you are creating a campaign with the purpose to reaching all types of audiences, you will want to avoid using language like “stand with us” in your communication campaigns. In American culture, it is very common to see language like “stand together” being used for community building sentiments or purposes. However, it excludes populations of people that may be unable to stand–like persons in wheelchairs or persons who are bedridden.
The above example may seem more obvious than others but circumstances happen very often in which organizations release campaigns that include language that may be isolating or offensive. For instance, one type of language use might be culturally inclusive to certain members of a community while still offensive to various groups within the community–see The Washington Football Team’s name change crisis for example. In situations where you need to create/design information in which you are unsure if any portion may be offensive or translate negatively, always (1) conduct research and/or (2) reach out to an expert or trusted source in that community for deeper understanding, in addition to using empathy and emotional intelligence.

The campaign that came to mind when doing this assignment was when H&M the clothing brand released a sweatshirt that said “coolest monkey in the jungle” and the photo of the sweatshirt was an African American boy wearing. The language was not implemented well here. This campaign created a lot of backlash for obvious reasons. It was almost like the people who created this campaign were just tone-deaf to the whole thing. First and foremost, I don’t even really think that the writing should be on any type of clothing- I do get what they are trying to say though. They wanted something that would be cute and fun and playful for kids to wear. They could have reworded the saying on the hoodie to make it a little bit better. The worst part here is that they used an African American child as the face of this hoodie. When this came out and made social media, H&M was wildly criticized for its reference to a monkey, which is a racial slur that people have been using to hurt people of color for years.
The article “Why Is LAnguage Important” touches on the six elements of language. These are very important because especially with a big corporation like H&M, they want to make sure that they are staying relevant. When releasing a campaign like that, it was inevitable that this would have caused the type of drama that it did. Making sure the message is clear and inclusive is the best way to ensure that you don’t get any backlash. he campaign that came to mind when doing this assignment was when H&M the clothing brand released a sweatshirt that said “coolest monkey in the jungle” and the photo of the sweatshirt was an African American boy wearing. One instance of language not being used efficiently that came to mind when I read this prompt was the Burger King International Women’s Day Initiative from a few years back. In honor of International Women’s Day, Burger King announced that they would be starting a scholarship fund for women to attend culinary school. This was an initiative that, of course, was intended to celebrate women, but the language used to announce it actually ended up upsetting a lot of people. The way that Burger King announced this campaign was through a series of tweets, but the first of which, read “women belong in the kitchen.” While this was the first in a series of tweets that went on to inform followers of the scholarship, this language was regarded as offensive by many. Their poor choice in language ended up bringing attention to the opposite of what they intended to – which is bridge the gap between the number of men and women in the culinary field and grant women access to spaces they otherwise would not have been able to experience. Rather, Burger King chose to play off stereotypes and make a joke as a lead up to their announcement. This is an example of language not being used thoughtfully, intentionally, or inclusively.
The article titled, ‘Why is Language Important? Your Guide to the Spoken Word” states that, “It’s easy to recognize that language today is changing alongside culture.” The Burger King Women’s Day initiative is a clear example of this, and how failing to recognize the power of language can really disrupt a business and their reputation. Burger King clearly failed to recognize that their language on twitter was not in support of an ever changing culture where inclusivity and respect for women is coming to the forefront. One instance of language not being used efficiently that came to mind when I read this prompt was the Burger King International Women’s Day Initiative from a few years back. Step 1: You need to choose a small business or organization that you’re involved in or or very familiar with. This can be a sports team, church group, school club or organization, job/internship related company, etc. And then you need to create an upcoming/ongoing event involving your chosen business or organization. Event ideas can include a fundraiser, community service/relations event, retreat, events for organizational announcement, celebrations of years of service etc.
Step 2: You need to create the components of a media kit for an organization and event of your choice. Your media kit must consist of:
A fact sheet (one page)
one page corporate profile in bulleted list format that gives the basic facts about an organization or a company
The most common type of fact sheet is the organizational profile, which gives basic information about an organization. This includes descriptions of products or services, annual revenues, markets served, and number of employees.
Keep in mind that the subheadings/categories used in the following examples may not be used in another one. Writers have some flexibility in the categories they choose in a fact sheet.
Sample template and examples
A news release (one page)
one page news release to market the event and attract promotion from news outlets and other media sources
It should be written like a story including information about what the event is about, who should consider attending, when and where it will be held and any other important information about the event. This is a story the media can use alone or as background to write a story.
Sample template and examples
A media alert/advisory (one page)
one page media alert, notifying reporters in advance about the event in bulleted list format
There are times when announcements do not require the distribution of a press release, but rather a concise notice to the media. This is called a media alert or advisory. To see how media alerts are different from news releases, see the PR Writing for Media assignment instructions.
A media alert/advisory includes a headline, a brief paragraph outlining the event, some of journalism’s five Ws and H (What, When, Where, Who), and whom to contact for more information.
Sample template and examples
Three Publicity photo/video/infographic ideas (one page)
It includes three ideas of publicity photo/video/infographic that will be included in the media kit and used to promote the event.
Each idea should describe the subject and the goals of each photo/video/infographic
Feel free to include reference images/videos
