Unit 2.1 Assignment: Child Study Project Part 1
Over the course of this term, you will complete a Child Study Project. You will use a variety of observation methods to observe a preschool child’s learning and development across domains. The text will walk you through the various methods of observation and each Unit (Units 3-6) we will discuss specific considerations for observing children’s development in the targeted domain or content areas. You will reflect on each observation and plan for supporting the next steps in the child’s learning. In Unit 8, you will reflect upon the entire portfolio. This project will also involve a family interview so that you can gather valuable information from those who know the child best.
THREE OPTIONS: This assignment typically involves observing a child in a child care or school setting. Some of you who are working in centers or schools may be able to complete this assignment as planned. However, because many child care centers and schools are closed or operating on a limited capacity due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, we will offer 2 possible modifications to this assignment for the term.
Below are the three options for completing this assignment.
OPTION 1: You are working in a center or school that is open and will be able to get permission from a family to observe and work with their child. If this is the case, you will complete the original assignment as posted in the syllabus, the Course Information Page, and in the Unit assignments.
OPTION 2: You are not working in a center or school but you have regular contact with a preschool-age child. You might be the parent or guardian of a preschool-age child, have a relative that you live with or visit, and/or might have video/remote contact with a child and their family. If this is the case, you can opt to complete this project assignment.
OPTION 3: You are not working in a center or school and do not have regular contact with a preschool-age child. If this is the case you will watch videos and complete the alternative forms provided in the course announcements. You will have specific forms that are designated as “VIDEO OPTION” if you will use this option.
Unit 2.2 Assignment: Objective Observation
In this assignment you will practice your objective observation and objective writing skills.
