These opportunities are for you to demonstrate your understanding of how race and ethnicity operate in our society using a media source of your own choosing. You are allowed a WIDE range of things you could analyze (e.g. poetry, music, comedy skits, movie trailers, commercials, newspaper articles, etc.). Selecting a media source allows students to express what they think represents a concept or theory and in doing so, demonstrates their knowledge. The purpose of this analysis is one that seeks to move beyond a superficial description. Critically link what you have learned using course concepts and materials presented this semester. You must use a minimum of one course-related source to support your analysis and add a bibliography/reference at the end of your assignment for your media source and any outside sources.
For this assignment, share an image (attachment or hyperlink) with an explanation of how your selected media relates to the content covered so far in the course (from any module!). Your analysis will develop out of your responses to the prompts below. You’ll use this same prompt for each media analysis assignment and select a new media each time. Select media that has NOT been used already in the course.
Requirements:
 800 – 1000 words, efficiently structured in essay format and submitted to Canvas under “Assignments”
 Explain why the image/media speaks to certain topics or theoretical concepts from the course – Clearly mention the work you will analyze. Clearly explain why your media speaks to AT LEAST ONE topic or theoretical concept from any module. Cite where the topic/concept you’re referencing came from (Week 1 – Week 7 modules) and explain the topic/concept. You’re welcome to connect to more than one topic
 Explain the context/historical framing of the image (3-8 sentences) – History and location play a pivotal role in defining race and ethnic relations. Where did the media come from? Who is the author, where did you find it, when was it created, what was happening around the time of its creation, and other context you feel is important.
 Analyze the media (3-8 sentences) – Consider why the particular form of the media significant or impactful? (video, photo of people, photo of artifact, photo of place, of culture, poem, art, abstract, other?) Why did you select THIS media source in particular over something else? Why did this stick out to you and why do you think it’s important to share and analyze? Do some research. Did your media circulate in a particular way (did the media circulate through newspapers, go viral, or is it less well-known? Explore these considerations and others that come up.
 Cite your References at the end APA style. Include the sources of any media you referenced from outside of class. No need to formally cite material from the class in this section.
Evaluation Rubric:
 Analysis of content, themes of course integrated into analysis with relevant references to text cited. Evidence adequately supported the analysis, without undue repetition. The paper moves beyond simply reviewing or describing the media to meaningfully engage important thematic and interpretive issues around race and ethnic relations.
 Develops ideas cogently, organizes them logically, and connects them with clear transitions. Each idea, or theme, effectively supports the main points of the analysis.
 Responded to all prompts thoughtfully and with original writing.
 Spelling was accurate. Grammar was correct. Quotations and citations were accurately and properly attributed to their sources. Paragraphing was sensible. Writing was clear and easy to follow.
Guidance and Tips
Media analysis studies texts: books, letters, videos, television shows, blogs, movies, newspapers etc. It looks directly at media texts (rather than interviewing media producers) adreflects on what they collectively say about an issue. The text is the thing you look at while
conducting your analysis. “Anything written, visual, or spoken that serves as a medium for communication” (Neuman, 1997).
The content is the “stuff” that you analyze within the text. “Content can be words, meanings, pictures, symbols, ideas, themes, or any message that can be communicated” (Neuman, 1997).
To analyze this content, we might cunt the amount of positive versus negative statements about someone, how a camera frames someone as powerful or weak, the amount of time someone is given to speak, and so on. Generally, content can be broken down into four categories:
Written: words, sentences, paragraphs, etc. Sonic / Audible: spoken words, music, sound effects, etc.
Visual: Images, pictures, color schemes, camera angles, facial expressions, etc.
Motive: The pace at which things move, the direction they move, etc.
Quantitative Content Analysis Quantitative methods count the numbers of mentions, keywords, latent semantic keywords, etc.
in order to create measurable comparisons. Comparisons can be made between media texts (e.g. “Which media are more inclusive of women?”, or between elements within a text (e.g. “What is the ratio between white and non-white representation within this text?”). Usually, software tools are employed during quantitative content analysis to create a reliable and objective overview of media representation.
Who? Look at the media channel doing the communication. Are they respectable? Are they historically biased? Do they follow journalistic ethics? Who funds them? Says What? Look at what is being said. How does it frame the issue? In which Channel? Look at the means of communication. Is it television, blogs, podcasts, etc.? How does the channel / medium impact the message being communicated? Is it a medium that attracts millennials, or baby boomers? To Whom? Look at who the target audience is. What might this say about why the message is framed the way it is? With what Effect? Has the media had an impact on politics, public discourse, the growth of certain movements, or the increased sale of certain products? Images: How do the images influence us? If the color scheme is mostly blue, perhaps the text is
designed to soothe and calm us. If there are images of someone in a white doctor’s coat, is it an advertisement trying to tell us that the product is backed by science? If there are low camera angles looking up at someone, is it trying to make that person appear powerful? Etc.
Discourse analysis explores discourses (messages circulating in society). It was created by Michel Foucault in the 1970s. It has become a very popular way of examining media texts to figure out how power is reproduced through media bias. Discourse analysis is unique in that its focus is on power. It wants to explore how media silences some people and empowers others.
 Who is silenced by the text? When closely examining your texts, think about who is absent in the text. This means not just looking at what’s said and shown. You also need to look at what isn’t said. What’s not shown is just as important as what is shown.
 What do silences say about the message? Once you know what isn’t said and shown, what can you infer from this? Is the media conveniently excluding certain points because they don’t adhere to capitalist consumer society? Are marginalized groups and their views missing from mainstream media?
 What is presumed as ‘true’ and what is presumed as ‘untrue’ within media messages? According to discourse analysis, truth is produced by discourse (the messages that circulate in society). So, discourse analysis critiques what is presumed to be true and untrue within media and how this might change over time.

The Case of Brittany Maynard: “My Right to Die”
This case was an actual event. Brittany Maynard, aged 29 years, was married for 1 year when she was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer, discovered she had approximately 6 months to live, and did not want her family to watch her suffering with pain during her dying process. After a long discussion with her physicians, her husband, and other family members, she decided to move from California to Oregon to take advantage of the Death with Dignity Act. She opted for physician-assisted suicide (PAS), which is a procedure that would allow her to self-administer physician-prescribed barbiturate medications to facilitate her death. She chose to die on November 1, 2014.
On her Facebook page, she left a message that day:
Goodbye to my friends and family that I love. Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me . . . but would have taken so much more. The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers. I even have a ring of support around my bed as I type . . . Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward.
Before her death, Brittany Maynard made a public statement on the right of terminally ill people to end their suffering quickly. She emphasized that no one but she could determine when her suffering had become intolerable, when her life had become unlivable, and at what point her dignity had faded. However, some people criticized Brittany Maynard for her decision to use PAS:
One person commented that Brittany Maynard refused to embrace suffering in any meaningful way and, as a result, did not acknowledge human finitude and vulnerability.
A group characterized her decision to use PAS as cheapening human life.

This assignment is the first step in a three part project. You only need to focus on part one at this point. Each step will build on earlier steps. However, it is not a matter of providing a rough publish of all or even part of the entire project here in week three. That is, further steps might require completely new and original text.
