Drawing on our discussion of Chesnutt and your developing understanding of theme

Drawing on our discussion of Chesnutt and your developing understanding of theme, I’d like you to write a short essay (1.5–2 double-spaced pages) in which you answer the following 2-part question: What role does dialect play in characterization within Chesnutt’s “The Wife of His Youth,” and how does this contribute to the larger thematic message of the work?
Note: Yes, I’m aware we discussed aspects of this question within your Perusall discussion, and yes, you are welcome to echo some our collective insights. The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice stating and defending a claim about literature in writing–since you’ll need to do so in a longer essay later in the term.
Regardless of your particular answer, be sure to complete the following:
Analysis (40%)
State and defend a clear thesis statement that answers the above question;
Offer specific textual evidence to support each of your claims;
Avoid summarizing the text.
Source Integration & Citation (20%)
Integrate quotations effectively. You may need to review the difference between summary, paraphrase, and quotation before you begin publishing;
Cite the selected work of literature following the 2016 MLA guidelines.
NOTE: This is your analysis of one text. You may not use and/or refer to any outside sources–not formal scholarship, not e-guides on the text, and certainly not other students’ essays. Please be sure to review the university’s statement on plagiarism in the UNCP Honor Code, as you are bound to it throughout the semester.
Organization (20%)
Include argument-driven topic sentences that forecast the content of each paragraph while also clearly referring back to and directly furthering the thesis;
Provide clear transitions between and within paragraphs.
Introduction (5%)
Compose a 2-sentence introduction: the first sentence should “hook” your reader; the second sentence should relay your thesis.
Conclusion (5%)
In 1-2 sentences state the importance of your argument/insight.
Style/Grammar (10%)
Maintain an academic tone;
Revise your essay to eliminate awkward/wordy phrasing, grammatical errors, and typos;
Format your document according to 2016 MLA guidelines (1-inch margins, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, proper heading and header, etc.).
NOTE:  Essays that do not adhere to the length requirement (within 3 double-spaced lines of the min./max.) will lose half a letter grade. Be sure to review the full policy regarding late work in Course Policies.
This assignment is due at 11:59PM, as I want to give you sufficient time to complete it as well as prep the new reading.

Examples of what we’ve studied in Literature:

• The story of A Hour Late Chopin
• Notes of A Native Son
Pick one theme in 2 pieces of literature we’ve studied so far in this class. Analyze why this is the theme in these two pieces of literature, and fully develop your thoughts and ideas on this analysis.
The paper should not simply be a summary of the two pieces of literature, but what point do you want to make by comparing these two pieces of literature around this similar theme? Feel free to do further research on these two pieces of literature around this theme, but attempt to write about the similar theme in these two pieces of literature based on your analysis and observations of the material. Don’t forget all of your literary elements and how to use them to help you get this task completed.
The point you make about the similar theme in the two pieces of literature will more than likely become your thesis, and then you will use the rest of the paper to develop and support your ideas on this point.

Rest at pale evening…

Night coming tenderly
Black like me.
• Can you draw comparisons? Is it possible to compare what’s happening today to some of the conflicts in the literature? How do events and issues happening today make you feel? How do the conflicts and situations in the literature make you feel?
Write two or three fully developed paragraphs responding to some or all of this.
Please complete this by the due date and time. Remember, you’re still able to submit this after the due date and time, but make sure you’re aware of the penalty for submitting this work late according to the policies on the syllabus.
