Creating a Text Glossary
Select any play we’ve read this semester and compile the following into a 10-item glossary:
words or foreign phrases that require definition and/or pronunciation clarification
references and allusions that need to be explained (such as mythological, literary, historical, biblical, music, and pop culture references)
unique social customs that require elaboration
titles and character names that need to be analyzed
This is frequently one of the first tasks a dramaturge might complete because it’s often a springboard into other areas of research. Please choose 10 items to define/ explain and briefly comment on how this connects to the overall world of the play. This question is worth 10 points.
2. Defining the Theory and Practice of Dramaturgy
Building your definition of what dramaturgy is and what a dramaturge does. Reflect on the readings, class discussions and guest speakers we have had throughout the term. You should be able to connect different ideas and theories of dramaturgy together to create and articulate your personal understanding of what dramaturgy is and what a dramaturge does. Fill in the prompts below to show me some ways you are now thinking about dramaturgical models and the role of a dramaturge. Please be specific, kind, deliberate and think like a dramaturge. Look back to class readings for support. This question is worth 10 points.
A dramaturge is
A dramaturge can

A dramaturge asks
A dramaturge always

3. Character & Context Podcast
You are tasked with creating promotional material for a theatre company doing one of the following plays:
Scorched by Wajdi Mouawad
Sound of the Beast by Donna-Michelle St Bernard
Burning Vision by Marie Clements
Create an outline for a series of podcasts or a web series/vlog in which 1-3 major characters will be interviewed in modern contexts (you can choose 1, 2 or 3 characters to interview). What will be discussed? At what point in the play are they being interviewed (before the play, after the play, mid action (ex. “Janine, you’re walking into the Notary’s office, what is on your mind?”) What would the characters be asked? Who is the interviewer (a theatre staff member? A historical figure?) How much of the plot would you give away? Is a humorous or serious approach more effective?
Keep in mind this would be both a stand-alone work and something that exists to get audience members to attend. This question is worth 10 points. Please include the following:
Title of your Podcast/ web series (1 POINT)
Summary of your show (1 POINT)
FIVE interview questions you would ask one character from the play (5 POINTS)
Connect your show’s summary and the questions you are asking to the themes/ topics discussed in class and to the overall world of the play you are highlighting. Share why your podcast is about world-building, and how dramaturgical lenses can help listeners better engage with the play. (3 points)
4. Culinary Dramaturgy
Plan an immersive theatre experience around any play this semester that includes audience members eating a five-course meal to be served during the performance, including pre-show and post-show. Justify each item on the menu. What is going on when that item is served? Use specific examples from your chosen play. Which moments of the story will you highlight to make the meal work? Make sure your meals have an overall theme that is connected to the world of the play. Please follow this format:
What will the Pre-show meal be- when does it get served, and what does this choice highlight before the play begins? How is it connected to the world of the play?
What will the second meal be- when does it get served, and how does this choice compliment the beginning of the play? How is it connected to the world of the play?
What will the third meal be- when does it get served, and how does this choice compliment the middle of the play? How is it connected to the world of the play?
What will the fourth meal be-when does it get served, and how does this choice compliment the end of the play? How is it connected to the world of the play?
What will the post-show meal be-when does it get served, and how does this affect the audience once the play is over? How is it connected to the world of the play?
This question is worth 10 points.

A short essay, 3-4 pages. The essay will be on a subculture chosen by the student, and the student will be asked to use at least 3 terms or concepts learned from the readings or discussions during class. I upload the class related files below.
All essays will be graded according to the following rubric:
Grade 10: Student discusses the subject matter discussed in lecture analytically, posits a thesis, and supports this thesis with specific examples. Thesis does not need to be anything super original, but rather just that you are argue something. Terms of engagement might include discussion of aesthetics (art, style, design, acting, direction), politics, style, affect, phenomenology, structure, gender, class, ethnicity, race, nationalism, identity, subjectivity, etc., and/or comparison with other subjects, previous discussions, video shown previously in class, or essays read. Students may write on any topic they can show to be relevant if the discussion is analytical and cites examples from the video, lectures, AND/OR readings to support their claims. Please title your papers.
Write two discussionn posts in order from 1-2:
1- The actor is the most visible and vulnerable collaborator in any production. After watching the PowerPoint Lectures: The Actor, The Actor’s Process and Acting Good or Bad,
Discuss how the concepts in Maslow’s Theory of Motivation help all actors determine fictional physical and vocal behavior that is believable.
Discuss how your understanding of what constitutes bad, mediocre, good and great acting was affected by watching the PowerPoint Lectures and the video clips. Provide evidence to support your ideas, reactions, opinions and observations with examples from the Lecture and the Video Clips. What do Henry Thomas, and Daniel Day Lewis have in common? What is the difference between their acting styles?
Discuss how the content of these lectures will help you evaluate the acting in future productions.
2- The actor is the most visible and vulnerable collaborator in any production, whether on stage or on screen. After watching the PowerPoint Lectures: Screen Acting and Acting for the Stage , please watch some of your favorite movie stars talk about their process in Actors on Acting.
Discuss the differences and similarities involved in acting for the stage versus acting for film and television.
Discuss how the content of these lectures and videos will help you evaluate the acting in future productions.
Provide evidence from the lecture and the most meaningful quotes from some of the actors in the video support your observations and opinions.
The live production you will be reviewing is Hamilton the Musical, which is located on Disney Plus. The file located below gives you instructions and ideas on what questions to answer in your review. Don’t just answer the questions. Make sure the review is in an essay format.
Length
At least 2 1/2 to 3 pages- double-spaced typed with a size 12 font
Organization
A well-written report depends on the effectiveness of the organization or structure – how the paper is put together, content- ideas in the paper, and usage-grammar rules, paragraphs, and style.
Your paper should have an introduction that grabs the attention of the reader; it should also state your position and summarize about three or four major points –the central idea of your essay–(what is it that you are going to critique or criticize about the production) to be developed that will support your position. It should also include when and where you saw the production.
The body of your paper should give support and evidence for your point of view or position stated in your introduction.
End with a conclusion that reviews or summarizes your position and a striking closing statement.
Content
Use specific examples and details from the production or the experience to really show and point out your view. Use descriptive language, so that the reader can visualize your perception while reading your description. Your essay should reflect an adequate understanding of theater concepts discussed in class. In other words, use theatrical terminology in your discussion. In your evaluation, you may focus on some of, but not necessarily limited to, the following:
One-paragraph summary of the show/plot.
Acting – Were the characters believable? What made the believable or not? How did the performer accomplish this? Elaborate on at least two characters. Compare and contrast the two.
Space – What type of theater space was used? Did it work for you? Was it appropriate for this production?
Scenery – Was it realistic or nonrealistic? Was it captivating? Was it appropriate for the plot of the play? Did it indicate time, location, class, etc? Were there any special props or effects used in the show that caught your attention?
Costumes – Were the costumes appropriate for the characters? Did the style indicate the times? Did they add or take away from the character?
Lighting- Was it realistic or nonrealistic? How was color used? Was special lighting used? Did the lighting add or take away from the production?
Grammar/Usage
All grammar and punctuation rules apply. Check Spelling.
