1. Research: Research the relationship between the emergence of homemade dance videos and COVID-19. Use Google Scholar, the SDSU library, and the Internet. The supporting material can be a published journal article, book chapter, news magazine, and professional or academic report. One source is required. An example is here: https://dancedispatches.com/dance-challenges-2020-…
2. Review some #Dance Challenge videos during the COVID-19 over the past few months. Choose one video that interests you.
3. Write a 3-page document (double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 points) that describes why people get into dance challenges and homemade dance videos during COVID-19 by taking an example from the video you found. Use at least one key term from the previous lectures or readings that highlight functions of social and popular dance to support your claims.
4. Proofread.
5. In the reference, include the source you found explained in #1, the video link on the web, and the week of the lecture you cited.

“Uprooted” The History of Jazz Dance:
1) Portfolio Activity 3.1.2.: Prior to engaging with the documentary below, briefly write a few sentences on the following: In your opinion, what is Jazz dance? What are some of it’s characteristics? (50-80 words)
(There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It is meant to serve as a starting point against which you can compare and reflect after watching the documentary. If you have no idea what Jazz dance is it is totally fine to say so. )
2) Watch the full documentary Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance (2020) provided below
link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUIYdLDPSmk
3) Portfolio Activity 3.1.3: As you’re watching take notes on the following questions:
– What are the stories that Jazz dance tells based on this documentary? (50 words – bullet points are ok)
– Do you observe any of the 5 Africanist Aesthetics in Jazz practices? If so, describe the movements and provide examples. (100 words)
– What are some of the cultural influences that impacted the development of Jazz dance? Name at least 4. (50 words max – bullet points)
– Now that you’ve watched the documentary, reflect back on your initial thoughts/knowledge of Jazz dance. What have you learned that you didn’t know before? Was your initial perception of Jazz different than what the documentary presents? If yes, why do you think that is? Do you notice any similarities between the ideas presented in Uprooted (2020) and other topics discussed in this course? (100-150 words)
Remember that you are now the “dance critic” watching/reviewing this dance. Imagine that you were hired by the LA or New York Times to see this piece live for the first time. Make sure to refer to the Ballet as a “Ballet” NOT a PLAY. Use the following as a guide for your paper.
Items to include:
What does the dance tell you, is there a story that you see? Do not google information on the dance. I want your opinion. Do you like it, why or why not? You need to give examples. Remember you are the dance critic; try to NOT watch the dance several times, as you would only see it once LIVE. Then you begin to overthink it. Perhaps you focus on a particular character, costumes, music, choreography or set design. I recommend you pick no more than two. Always give me in introductory and closing paragraph. Title your paper with a catchy name. Tell me in your paper the name of the Ballet, composer and choreographer. Lastly, make sure to write your name on the paper. Looking forward to reading your critique! If you have any questions, please ask in class as another student may have the same question.
