Purpose: To develop research and problem-solving skills within a professional context; to learn how to write an extended argument.
Situation: Each student will choose a city or town in Southern California. You may choose from locations within the following counties:
• Los Angeles
• Orange
• Riverside
• San Bernardino
• San Diego
Research the city you have chosen: look closely at the census data to get a sense of the age, gender, income, racial, and cultural makeup of the town, along with any other important information you can find.
Task: In a correctly formatted memo addressed to Katharine Sentz, describe your selected town in detail, focusing on an overview of the demographics and existing local businesses within that city. Create a compelling argument for a type of business that is missing within the city that would cater to a specific demographic.
Use academic sources that seem appropriate, but make sure you go beyond the surface. Learn what you can about the city and its demographics. What demographic is underserved by the businesses and/or services available? What type of business or service would attract or cater to this demographic?
Keep track of your sources: cite them in the text and list them in your References in correct APA formatting. Incorrect attribution will cause a substantial reduction in your report grade.
Tips: Try to come up with interesting and useful business ideas before choosing one to recommend. Also, carefully look at the demographics before you choose the one you feel is best suited for analysis.
Format:
• The text of the report should be single-spaced, font 11 or 12, 1 inch margins, 3-4 pages long
• Use correct memo format addressed to me: Katharine Sentz.
• Use headings for each section (and don’t be afraid to be creative).
• Include a References page with at least ten citations in standard APA style (you can use surveys and interviews as well if you like). They must be as current as possible. The references page does not count toward page count.
• Proofread carefully and SPELLCHECK.
Expected Student Outcome: You will develop research and critical thinking skills. You will also learn how to identify and target key issues in a real world setting.
Assessment:
I’ll be looking for analysis above all. Your job is to prove that a current demographic is underserved by the businesses and/or services in your city and make an argument for a type business that would do well here given the statistics of your town. Grading will follow the CLASS rubric. This assignment is worth 75 points

Case: Cummings v. Premier Rehab Keller, P.L.L.C.
Jane Cummings has been deaf since birth and is legally blind. In 2016, she contacted Premier Rehab Keller to treat her chronic back pain and requested that Premier provide an ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter. Premier refused and told her she could communicate with her therapist using written notes, lipreading, gesturing, or provide her own ASL interpreter. Cummings ultimately went to another physical therapy provider but found the alternate provider “unsatisfactory.”
Cummings sued Premier for disability discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, and the Texas Human Resources Code § 121.003. In her complaint, she sought injunctive relief and damages. The district court granted Premier’s motion to dismiss, finding that “[t]he only compensable injuries that Cummings alleged Premier caused were ‘humiliation, frustration, and emotional distress,’” and emotional distress damages are unavailable under the statutes Cummings relied on. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed.

Investigate professional journals and locate two articles relevant to issues in the United States and that pertain to organizational behavior topics from this course that interest you. You are to critique each article according to the instructions below. The articles should be less than three-years-old. You are to use the ProQuest Central database found in the University of Arizona Global Campus Library.
Each three-page critique (a total of six pages for both critiques) must include the following three parts. Include both article reviews into one document for submission to Waypoint (do not submit two documents).
Complete the following three parts:
Identify the articles
Provide the reader with enough information about your articles so they will be able to locate the article. Describe your search process.
Summarize the articles
Identify the main points that the authors have tried to establish (i.e., 1, 2, 3, or first, second, third). There normally will be three to five main points per article. If you are summarizing a court case, you should discuss the following:
What provision of the law was at issue? Briefly state the facts of the case.
What legal tests were applied?
Were there any unusual elements in the case?
Provide sufficient information to demonstrate you understand the content of the article.
Critique the article
Provide your reaction (insightful, critical, and logical) to the points that the authors tried to make or an overall critique of the entire articles.
