In his article “The Pristine Myth: The Landscape of the Americas in 1492” (1992), William M. Denevan makes the following argument: “There is substantial evidence…that the Native American landscape of the early sixteenth century was a humanized landscape almost everywhere. Populations were large. Forest composition had been modified, grasslands had been created, wildlife disrupted, and erosion was severe in places. Earthworks, roads, fields, and settlements were ubiquitous.”
Using the assigned readings for Module 1, develop a response that either refutes or reinforces Denevan’s argument. You must use evidence from the secondary source (Steinberg, Down to Earth) and at least one of the primary sources.
Approximately 600 words
12-point font, Times New Roman
Cite your sources in parentheses at the end of the sentence. For Steinberg, cite the author’s last name and page number. For primary sources, use a shortened version of the title given in the text. Ex: (Steinberg, 23) or (“Pueblo Irrigation,” 37)
