Suppose you are the development director for a small nonprofit literacy organization. You have a modest individual giving program that has good board involvement and serves your agency’s core programs. Your boss, the executive director, tells you the board wants to launch a new project. It would bring in-home tutoring to underserved kids. It will cost $10,000 to get off the ground. The board has asked that you identify new sources of support for this project rather than going back to the same “usual suspects,” meaning the individual donors that have been supporting the core programs. In other words, you can approach, corporations, foundations, or seek out new individual donors. Which source of support would you first target for this new project?
Write a post of 1-2 paragraphs outlining a course of action to fund this project. As you can image, there’s no right solution; I’m most interested in your thought process. As you respond to your peers, be sure that you not only cheer them on, but help them consider the pros AND the cons of their chosen approach–there are always risks and rewards to any path forward. The point of this week’s discussion is to start seeing multiple sides of an adaptive challenge. By making a recommendation and then responding to someone else’s idea, you’ll start to simulate the work environment where you have multiple people presenting multiple options.
