Is it fair or ethical for a society to allow some of its members to accumulate vast fortunes and live in wealth and luxury while others live in extreme poverty? Compare the views of two different philosophers or ethical traditions (listed a few names down below).
Do we have a moral obligation to help the poor and needy? Compare the views of two different philosophers or moral traditions.
According to Thomas Aquinas, “whatever a man hath in superabundance is due, by natural law, to the poor for their sustenance. For this reason Ambrose says, and his words are embodied in the Decretals: ‘It is the hungry man’s bread that you withhold, the naked man’s cloak that you store away, the money that you bury in the earth is the price of the poor man’s ransom and freedom’” (Summa Theologica II, 2, Q 66, A 7). Aquinas concludes that if a person is in “manifest and urgent need” (for example, dying of sickness or starvation), it is lawful use and not theft for them to take what they need from those who have more than enough. Do you agree or disagree with this view? Please support your position with arguments or principles from at least one philosopher or moral tradition.
