Part 1: Understanding Ourselves First
We all have biases that can impact children. Select and complete one of the 14 subtests from the following resource:
Teaching Tolerance. (2015). Test yourself for hidden bias. Retrieved from http://www.tolerance.org/supplement/test-yourself-hidden-bias
(I took the test already, so I will attach the results)
After reviewing your results, explain the following:
What you learned from the bias tests (You are not required to include your results. This self-analysis is for your use only.)
Whether you believe biases are easily manipulated
How the power of language can affect self-expression, identity development, and learning
How you can use what you learned about yourself in working with children
Include information from this week’s resources that help to support your ideas. This part should be 1–2 pages.
Assignment Part 2: Understanding Current Issues Impacting Diverse Classrooms
For each of the seven areas listed below, use this week’s resources to describe the critical issues related to each area in today’s classrooms, and describe three specific strategies for working with students. At least one of these strategies must include a technology resource that empowers learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
Students learning English
Gender differences
Children of adoption
Minnesota-based American Indian (focus on cultural context, world view, concepts that comprise American Indian government, history and language culture)
Influence of parental use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and other chemicals on children
Race
Gifted students
Include in your analysis why it is important to know some of the history of inclusion of the group representing the topic you selected. How does knowing some of the history impact decisions you might make in your classroom? An understanding of students’ families, cultures, and communities is an important consideration when designing instruction. Include an explanation of how you will connect students’ experiences to future instruction. Use at least two resources for your paper.
This part should be 2–3 pages.
To combine Part 1 and Part 2, follow these directions in Microsoft Word: Use a title page referring to the overall assignment. Include Part 1 after the title page. Put Part 2 after Part 1, starting on a new page. At the end, include your reference list.
