Miss Marple
Now that you have read crime fiction novels featuring a variety of women detectives, we return to Miss Marple, as she appeared much later than in the short stories we read at the beginning of the class and the series of books featuring her.
As you read, please note any differences in how she is portrayed. For one thing, she is more active than in the short stories, despite being older and feeling her age. She ventures out to explore “The Development” even though she has only recently recovered from an illness. She pursues a more involved investigation, interviewing the suspects and witnesses. Chief-Inspector Dermont Craddock comes to her for information and welcomes her insights, unlike Inspector Slack in the short stories who resents her interference.
She is also very clever at getting to do what she wants to do! And of course, it is Miss Marple who solves the mystery in the end!
