This is an opportunity to do a deep dive into one LGBTQ identified writer’s works. Choose an LGBTQ identified writer (poet, playwright, novelist, essayist) either read in class or not. If choosing a writer from this class, you must choose texts that we have not already read. After doing a close reading of at least five different texts (this can include five poems, five short stories, five books, five essays, etc) written by this author, write a minimum of a five-page research paper exploring each text, looking at what can be learned based on their approach to writing. For example, consider literary techniques, content, form (how they present their work), historical connections, timeliness of content, inclusivity of audience, intersectionality, politics, evolution/shifts within their work. In what ways are these “queer” texts? How might they be important in the cannon of queer literature? Your paper must use MLA formatting guidelines, typed in a 12-point font, with margins of no more than one inch in any direction, and double-spaced. A works cited page must also be included.
You will be asked to submit a proposal half-way into the semester. Your proposal must include:
Whose work you are studying
At least three sources written by the writer of what you will be exploring (names of poems, stories, books)
Why you are choosing to research and write about these sources
At least three research questions that you want to focus on
A link to sources (at least 3)
