1) Carefully review the attached primary source worksheet to remind you of the questions you need to keep in mind as you analyze primary sources.
2) Carefully read the attached primary sources.These are pages from an 1888 program for the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, followed by a transcript of the text of the program. Make sure to view the details of the images in addition to reading the text of the program. The programs were designed as audience keepsakes and sold at the public performances of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in the U.S. and Europe.
3) Then, write an essay of at least 750 and at most 900 words that answers the following question: What does this program reveal about late-nineteenth-century myths and how does it perpetuate those myths about a) the West, b) indigenous Americans, and c) the “cowboy”?
In writing this assignment: for every claim that you make, you should cite a passage from the sources that supports your claim. Use parenthetical citations to document your sources. For example: (Buffalo Bill program, p. 3). When you refer to in-class worksheets, lecturecasts, Crash Course videos, podcasts, etc., be sure to cite those as well. There should be no unsupported claims in your writing.
You do not need to consult any outside sources to answer the questions, and you should not do so. If you do consult outside sources you need to cite them by footnoting them. See the tutorials in the section of the menu on the left marked “Video Tutorials” where you will find directions for creating footnotes in several different types of document files. You can also find directions for tracking word count in different programs in “Video (and other) Tutorials.”
