The topic due Feb. 17 will be your first effort to identify a suitable subject for your research essay. You may write on any historical or contemporary issue pertaining to indigenous people anywhere on the globe. You need not confine your study to North America. The only requirement is that the sources must be available. That is why I am asking you to submit a preliminary bibliography.
The assignment will consist of 1-page, double-spaced explanation of your topic and should include the following:
Identify the culture/tribe/nation you will study.
The issue you will study.
The geography encompassed by the study.
The time period.
A brief overview or description of your topic.
Why you want to study this particular topic.
Be written in sentence and paragraph form.
Then attach your bibliography after your topic. The initial bibliography should consist of 8 or more books, articles, and websites that meet the following criteria:
Include at least 3 scholarly works ie. books and articles published by academics that have gone through peer review. The databases Academic Search Premier, America History and LIfe and World Cat have filters for peer review. Any book or article published on a university press is most likely peer reviewed.
Include at least two works by Indigenous authors (oral traditions and Indigenous art/material culture count) that express an Indigenous world view or perspective. Indigenous authors almost always include their tribal affiliation in their biography. If in doubt, you can Google the author or check with me.
Other works may be official reports, journalistic accounts, articles, or approved websites ie. official tribal websites.
