Refresh your recollection with the 7-Steps of Just Cause. as well as the earlier module where 7-Steps was first referenced .
The DESC model makes it easier to get started on a tough conversation by providing a rubric to guide you, and 7-Steps is a rubric to practice good faith and fair dealing in performance management issues.
Assignment: Post: After reading DESC (See Required Reading in this Unit), script the conversation you plan to have with the employee in response to the below mini cases.
No need to script what the employee will state in return, only the manager’s statements. Respond to each case below with a script for your fellow colleagues to read. Note that you should be clear, concise, leaving no room for misinterpretation (which requires clarity in statements).
1. Case Facts: You are a supervisor in a warehousing operation. You recently instituted a “No Smoking” policy in the facility. All employees were notified of the policy change. It was not well-received. As you walk down aisle B in the warehouse, you see a cloud of smoke and then see Chris running to aisle A. You need to talk to Chris. Write the conversation you intend to have based on the DESC model. Assume that Chris has no acceptable reason for his behavior and write your script accordingly.
2. Case Facts: You are a project manager and supervise a team of 11 people. It is near Christmas, and you notice that within one day the office supply cabinet has been conspicuously depleted of tape, scissors, and packing materials. Other than you, the administrative assistant, Lesley, is the only one with the key to the cabinet. You did not take the materials, and a quick look around the office does not reveal a cache of materials in expected storage areas. You need to talk to Lesley. Write the conversation you intend to have based on the DESC model. Assume that Lesley denies taking the materials, but offers no plausible explanation for what happened to them (i.e., the cabinet has always been locked except for your key and hers).
Must address all DESC elements for full points.
