For this unit, you will be writing two separate analysis paragraphs–one over each of the poets whose work you chose to read.
The purpose of an analysis paragraph is to help you build the skills you need to create critical paragraphs, which provide the foundation for an analytical essay. There is a handout on writing an analysis paragraph in the Supplemental Materials folder (see the Start Here section of the course).
You will later be developing this paragraph into a full-length essay.
In your paragraph, I want you to choose an element from the poem that you would like to do an in-depth analysis over. This can be symbolism, character development, the importance of the setting, a theme that stood out to you, etc . Once you have chosen what you would like to focus on, your paragraph needs to meet the following criteria:
MLA format;
Easily identifiable thesis;
Supporting evidence;
10-12 sentences;
Academic language, 3rd person;
Demonstration of critical thinking.
I do not want to see any summarizing of your chosen text(s) in your analysis paragraph. Instead, you need to be digging deeper and seeking to interpret the poem.
