For our assignment this week, we’re going to be doing a “quotation sampler” to practice the skill of interacting with a text–something that will be crucial for developing your Final Essay. However, we’re going to start small, and build our way towards the final product of incorporating the ideas and quotes of a text into our own writing.
So, for this prompt, choose three quotes from one of our readings this week. They can be quotes you found interesting, quotes you found confusing, quotes you disagreed with, etc. Copy and paste each quote into your response. Under each quote, answer the following questions to critically interact with that quote:
1. What is being said? Summarize the quote in your own words.
2. What is being implied? How does it connect to the author’s larger point? Are there hidden meanings in the quote? Could it be interpreted differently than the author intended? How?
3. What is your response? What do you think of the author’s idea? What experiences of your own might it remind you of? What aspects of your life might it make you question? What new thoughts does it bring up?
After answering these questions for each of your three quotes, congratulations! You’ve just critically interacted with a text!
