Ive often pondered the idea of why I wanted a career change; unrelated to my previous Degree earned from college a couple years back. Graduating then working a variety of low-paying unfulfilling jobs led me to a new direction in the health field. In the tight-knit yet culturally diversed city of New Bedford, I landed a position working for a Non-Profit Company; working with mentally impaired adults whom often times were low-functioning non-verbal autistics. I worked and gained extensive hands-on knowledge about how to care, medicate, and educate clients. One on one direct care for these clients became second nature to me, they became my family. This job was a gateway for new doors of opportunities in the health field. During the pandemic when COVID-19 first hit I worked endlessly with patients who needed to quarantine and be confined to their rooms. Times like that I learned the true meaning of what it was to be “essential” …assist and cater to others in need unconditionally. Culturally this was the way I was brought up as well. The Thai Buddhist culture…. I was brought up to always be empathetic, and compassionate towards those in dire need regardless of whom they are. Besides those beneficial qualities I am also known to be a multitasker in any stressful or fast-paced setting and can adapt to change and demands. The strong skillsets led me to earning learning various of certificates in the healthcare field such as: Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist, and Pharmacy Technician.
Currently I am a Trauma Certified Phlebotomist at a Trauma equipped hospital in New Bedford. I work second and third shifts and encounter alot of gut-wrenching, life/death situations.
