200 words for the proposal and three annotations of c. 150 words each
The goal of a proposal and annotated bibliography is twofold: it offers you an opportunity to think through and reflect on your topic and initial research, and it gives me a chance to steer you into the right direction—if necessary—or give advice about your topic. A proposal does a few things: it introduces the topic you propose to work on, provides a research question and/or a tentative thesis, provides a methodology or plan for the research, and gives a sense of why this question is significant. Having the right research question is one of the most important steps in writing as essay, and one where students often go wrong. It is important to narrow down your scope, as there is not much you can do in a 5-6 page paper. Trying to do too much is one of the most
common mistakes and results in poorly structured essays or papers that lack depth and detail. With your proposal, you will include an annotated bibliography with at least three peer-reviewed sources you are planning to use. You will list your sources and write a short c. 150 words annotation for each of them. The annotation should address at least the following: what
is the article or book about, what is its thesis or conclusion, and why is it useful for your research. You may also want to address the source’s methodology, if relevant, or any theoretical framework.
The belief in witchcraft is seldom seen as a ‘legitimate’ belief, yet such beliefs are central to many African worldviews. Write an essay about an aspect of witchcraft in African history. [Note: witchcraft is a practice (that you may or may not believe is real) not a religion. It is, however, a practice and a belief in this practice that is rooted in a certain cosmology.
